What is truth?

What is truth?

We all have our own version, of truth, that is.

And in the long run, does it really matter?

We all live our lives in our own little spaces carved into the world until...

the end.

I wonder sometimes what my truth really is. What is real?

We all have our illusions.

Sometimes I think we lie to ourselves to keep from screaming,
to stay sane.

We create our own version of the truth so that we can sleep,
but, we don’t, sleep, that is.

We all lie…

awake

sometimes

and wonder…

what is truth?

This should be categorized as a poem Mary. Very nice.

Hey Becky, Thank you! Maybe so. To me at the time was just random thoughts. Think I tweeted the first 3 lines and then went away. Came back later and liked it so I wrote a few more...

Agree with Becky, lovely and true (hey just like you!) well I think thankfully I don't think all the time about what is my truth. I remember my truth before my grandmother got sick, and I remember my truth for 2 decades after that. Very different people, very different truths. I think all were real, in my head anyway, I guess that makes them real. I think I'm learning what my truth is now, thanks in large part to you and Becky . :o) I'm babbling because it's late and I'm tired, but very nice, very good question. xo

Thank you Caroline! But, I have to give credit to @Jennyablue for the question.

I think you are correct in regards to a person's truth, it does change as we age and mature. My truth has also changed significantly as I have gotten older, particularly after I turned 50. We learn and grow and sometimes in the process our truth is revealed. Sometimes it is by our actions and also by events around us. I am thinking of the poet Rumi, where he advised that if we lived the questions, we would find the answers when we were ready. I am paraphrasing; I wish I could find the exact quote. But, in that line of thinking, our truth would be different at different times of our life.

I think that at times we also hide from the truth because we cannot bear it. It is too painful. But as we grow, we can become strong enough and then can accept the truth we have hidden from ourselves.

I also think it is rather humorous that my comment is now longer than the actual post (poem) itself.

What is our purpose?

...to amuse and be amused
to be kind, loving and free in thought
to bring peace to a stranger and familiar alike
to work, play and create.

Yes? I think so.

Truth comes from purpose. xo

I love your post, Mary. Thank you for sharing. xo

Mary... What beautiful words... I just wanted to thank you for the kind note you left on my blog a short while ago... I found you in a mention on another blog am glad we were able to connect... So often grieving can feel like a lonely process and even the most anonymous words can mean so much when you are feeling your lowest... Thank you so much...

Hey, Mary. I think the quote you were trying to find is not Rumi, but rather Rainer Maria Rilke in Letters to A Young Poet: "Live your questions now, and perhaps even without knowing it, you will live along some distant day into your answers." xo.

You are right Katherine and I just found the book yesterday. I had to read Rilke for a creative writing class, but I might just have to read it again.

Thank you for reading and for commenting.
